Gaya's Astronomy, a new fanfic series

Gaya's Astronomy is a science fanfiction set in the Star Trek universe.  A play on Grey's Anatomy, Gaya's Astronomy follows the careers and personal lives a few young Ensigns newly graduated from Starfleet Academy.

The Ensigns

Ensign Gaya Mylanti
(our version of GA's Meredith Grey)
Gaya Mylanti (envisioned as actress Megalyn Echikunwoke) is a Bajoran Ensign serving aboard the USS Enterprise.  Technically a refugee, Mylanti (Gaya is her surname) never talks about her family on Bajor or what it was like to live under the Cardassian Occupation.  While her crewmates all dream of some day sitting in the Captain's chair, Gaya doesn't talk much about her future either.

Ensign Cillia Yarin
(Christina Yang)
Cillia Yarin (Aja Naomi King) is a Trill Ensign and Gaya's roommate.  She comes from a long line of joined Trill and is a driven Starfleet officer.  She has her eye set on becoming an Admiral some day and she never lets anyone forget it.

Ensign Gabriel Ohn
(George O'Malley)
Gabriel Ohn is a human Ensign (Edward Hong).  He comes from a big family, enjoys holography, and is an overall fun-loving individual who constantly dreams of having his own command some day.  Though Gabriel attracts a lot of women, he often turns them down due to his huge crush on Mylanti, as he is fascinated by her mysterious, aloof nature and unwillingness to share.

Ensign Isioma "Isi" Soyinka
(Izzie Stevens)
Isioma Soyinka (Rutina Wesley) is also a human Ensign and another bunkmate of Gaya's.  Though human, she was raised on Risa, where her mother worked.  Isi has never stopped resenting her mother for raising her on a pleasure planet.  At the Academy, it earned her an unpleasant reputation.

Ensign Alejandro Kanaway
(Alex Karev)
Ensign Kanaway (Dante Basco) is human, and grew up aboard a freighter ship called the Langit (Tagalog for "sky").  His childhood travels took him all over the Federation and even beyond.  As such, he's fluent in languages like Klingon and has a wanderer's spirit...especially with the ladies.

The Lieutenants

Lt. Melinda Barton
(Miranda Bailey)
Lt. Melinda Barton (Rachel True) is a human who's upset she's been assigned to train and assess a group of newly arrived Ensigns.  In her opinion, she has better things to do, but the Starfleet rule dictates this is all part of the job.  Lt. Barton is tough, driven, and no-nonsense, demanding that everything be done her way.  This is earned her the infamous nickname "Borg Queen."

Lt. Calandra Tria
(Callie Torres)
Lt. Tria (Dania Ramirez) is a Betazoid who's training to become a ship's counselor.  She's beautiful, warm, engaging, so naturally, most of the women on the ship hate her.  Though Tria seems to have it all, she comes from a very strict family and is constantly pressured to return home and marry a husband chosen for her at birth.

The Lieutenant Commanders

Lt. Cmdr. Damian Silent River
(Derek Sheperd)
Lt. Cmdr. Damian Silent River (Nathaniel Arcand) is a human.  He specializes in tactics and has had his taste of combat.  His experience has given him a deep love of life and appreciation for laughter. A Native American, Damian is no stranger to historical oppression and colonization.  He understands where Mylanti is coming from, and he knows that her tight-lipped tendencies indicate a very dark and shameful secret.

Lt. Cmdr. Pranay Bhatnagar
(Preston Burke)
Lt. Cmdr. Pranay Bhatnagar (Kunal Nayyar) is a human science officer.  Raised primarily on Vulcan, Pranay (whose name means "romance") is annoyed by his combat experiences.  A devout follower of many Vulcan teachings, Pranay joined Starfleet to see the universe, not fight with it.  He often takes tea with Damian, during which they play chess together.

A/N ~ Though this takes place onboard the Enterprise, the bridge crew won't be involved in the story unless absolutely necessary.

  1. I am intrigued to say the least. I am a Trekkie from way back and to have a cast composed of people of color makes me happy indeed. I could never understand how they traversed the universe but the majority or core person still resembled the standard caucasian. In my mind, I would always see the balance shifted. With trends we know, how can the future possibly have caucasians remain the majority. A little pet peeve, but a Star Trek lover nonetheless.

    1. This is intended to remedy all that. I'm going to make it as fun and hilarious as possible, but I also want to add some depth and gravity. I'm going to diverge from the Grey's Anatomy plotlines.

And because of the Dominion War, Season 2 may have to take place on Deep Space Nine.
